Undergrounds Coffee and Roastery is a fun little shop in Buffalo's Old First Ward. It seems that many coffee shops and roasters that open ignore the neighborhood's history and culture and supplant it with something sterile and shallow, but Undergrounds is different. The owners have a long history in the neighborhood and lean hard into the history of the building they occupy. It was formally a funeral home and their clever name is just the tip of the iceberg. Their food menu features items named and inspired by deceased folks who have a connection to Buffalo. Those honored include Mary Cass, Tim Russert, Ralph Wilson, and Glover Cleveland. My favorite gimmick(I use the term endearingly) is their Roastery Club. Locals can sign up for $100 to get free coffee, special deals, 10%, and a custom made coffee mug. The mug is made by a local artist with a portrait of a deceased person who you'd like to have coffee with. No repeats are allowed and the mugs are displayed at the shop. [See below] We'll be placing our order for coffee from this fun roaster on January 20th, so be sure to jump aboard the coffee club before then to get in on the fun.
